I am a Lead Staff at Sojourner House in Eau Claire. When I arrived in Eau Claire almost four years ago, I was homeless, unemployed and had nowhere to stay. I discovered a warming center put on by a local church where I could sneak in some shut-eye between 10 pm and 6 am. This place was seasonal and was scheduled to close mid-March. I heard of a committee meeting every other week to establish a year-round shelter in Eau Claire. I went to the next and subsequent meetings that resulted in establishing the Sojourner House. I was very lucky when Valleybrook Church volunteers kept their warming center open an extra couple of weeks due to the long winter. In those 2 extra weeks I was able to secure a job, and the day they closed, a room opened up at The InnTowne Hotel, a nearby transitional house for men. That was April 1, 2011 and on November 1, 2011 Sojourner House opened their doors. About a month prior I was asked to work at the shelter and I jumped at the chance. Next month Sojourner House will celebrate it’s 3rd birthday. In those 3 years I have met hundreds of guests and volunteers. I have been able to “share the journey” with dozens of guests who have lifted themselves out of homelessness. It has been very fulfilling with this hardest and easiest job I’ll ever love.
