Bankruptcy Counseling

Catholic Charities offers confidential briefing and group sessions with compassionate Financial Wellness Advocates. This service is available to everyone, regardless of ability to pay.

In 2005, the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act was put into effect. The Act mandates that anyone filing for personal bankruptcy has to complete a pre-filing counseling session; and before receiving a bankruptcy discharge, debtors are required to complete an instructional course on personal financial management. Catholic Charities is approved by the Executive Office for U.S. Trustees to deliver the necessary counseling and education required by law.

Before bills can be discharged in bankruptcy, the Bankruptcy Code requires that individuals provide proof of financial education. We are approved to issue certificates in compliance evidencing completion of a personal financial management instructional course in compliance with the Bankruptcy Code. Approval does not endorse or assure the quality of a provider’s services. We provide the “Money In Motion” curriculum online and through group sessions. You must pre-register with Catholic Charities before you can access the online curriculum.
